“Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.” Numbers 22:6
Even the people in my life who readily state that most things come pretty easy for them will admit that there is that ONE area.
The Israelites received a blessing from the Lord that no one could touch. A massive gift! But that doesn’t mean no one would try. Balak and the Moabites saw the Israelites (vast as they were) in the distance and became overcome by fear. Rather than taking that fear in prayer to the God of Abraham, Balak went very much out of his way to reach out to Balaam who was known for divination. He invested time (a lot of it), money (continued to increase the payment) and effort (a few tries) into a man and a way that was displeasing to the Lord.
He saw with his eyes, an army which (in his mind) was too powerful to overcome. He believed a lie. That lie was that he could find a way to protect himself without asking help from the Lord, the God of Abraham.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. Prov. 3:5
According to his understanding, he was facing a major problem!
There are some significant ways that I’ve noticed the Lord’s power in my life to overcome or face difficulty. Both involve acknowledging Him. Balak wasted a lot of resources not acknowledging God.
I spent many years acknowledging the Lord without really recognizing His power in my life. And definitely unaware of how to consciously manifest His power. Although I know He was working and I have countless stories of proof; I struggled in different areas such as assurance of salvation and found myself constantly asking for relief.
Focusing on His truths is also important. One thing that I didn’t do when I struggled and asked for relief was to replace the lies with the truths. For every lie or struggle, there is at least one truth, often more, that the Lord offers in His word for us to focus and meditate on. The more we focus and meditate on those truths, the more they make their way to our hearts and flood out the lies enabling us to experience His gift of freedom.
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. Rom. 8:26
I cannot overstate the importance of finding people you trust who will intercede on your behalf. Even if you don’t wish to share details, prayer is important and the Lord knows the details.
Lord, thank you for your provision of protection. Help me to be quick to seek you first. Amen
